SCHOOL IS FAILING EVERYONE
"Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid". - Albert Einstein.
The objective of the Educational System in Nigeria is not only to make the fish climb a tree but to also make it Jump down and run 20 miles.
So many students have lost belief in themselves in becoming what they are truly meant to be. A common saying by our teachers / instructors which has made the lives of so many students miserable today: "If A can do it, why can't you?", "How many heads does A have that makes you different?", "You all have the same brain so why is it only you?".
It is not wise and inappropriate to judge everybody by the same set of metrics. But the Educational System in Nigeria disagrees with that. The system prefers to sit everybody down, forces them to listen, speak only when they are given permission to, wants everyone to go through all the syllabus / curriculums, learn every bit of information given to them, bind everyone within the same time frame to produce result, make them repeat this activities 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. And at the end of first quarter everyone is subjected to go through the same test, with the same grading, the same analytics and finally awards the best based on performance and speed, neglecting individual strengths and weaknesses, forgetting that a fish will perform well in water, a monkey will do well in climbing trees and a Lion will be better at running 20 miles.
What has SCHOOL become of in Nigeria today? How has this system Benefited the lives of many? At what point are we going to realize that SCHOOL is robbing us of greater accomplishments in life?
Let me explain..
8 Years in Primary Education.
6 Years in secondary Education.
If all goes well, may be 6 years in Tertiary Education.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
60% graduates moves into the labour market in search for Jobs.
28% goes back to further in school.
12% starts their own businesses.
In Nigeria, 5% of funded businesses thrive to succeed.
Only 2% becomes cooperate businesses.
Qualified graduates applies for low skill jobs.
Unemployment rate increases.
And this has become the status-quo in the Nation.
Only the skillful, wise and opportune ones can afford to live satisfactorily.
OUR SCHOOLS ARE FAILING EVERYONE.
Roughly, about 20 years of our lives have been subjected to learn things some of us are not capable of learning, 20 years have been focused in doing what the system wants of us. 20 years have we spent on education to get a certificate just to work for someone who spent less on the same education.
My point is this: "SCHOOL is not necessarily EDUCATION". One of the ways of acquiring Education is through Schools but the Educational system in Nigeria hasn't done much good in schools to prepare students for the future rather preparing them for the past. If we can upgrade our houses, cars and phones, why can't we upgrade our system of education.
"While students may be 20% of our population, they are 100% of our future. So let's attend to their dreams" - Prince EA

Exactly, I still even wonder why many people still want to further their education especially in this country. You can further your education abroad but in this nation, you will end up serving those who didn't go to school.
